The Power of Small Wins: How Autism Helped Me Achieve My Black Belt in Karate
As someone on the autism spectrum, I've discovered that joy can be found in the smallest details, and sometimes, those tiny moments snowball into remarkable achievements. One such unexpected path to growth and self-discovery has been my journey in martial arts. While karate may seem like an unconventional approach to autism therapy, its structured and holistic nature has proven to be a perfect fit for my neurodiverse brain. By merging physical activity, mental discipline, and social interaction, martial arts have become a powerful catalyst for my personal growth and development. In this blog post, I'll share my story of earning a black belt in karate, highlighting the significant role autism played in my success, and illustrating how embracing our differences can lead to extraordinary accomplishments.
My karate journey began in February 2019, sparked by the encouragement of my friend and his mom. This marked the starting point of a life-changing experience that would profoundly impact my life. Karate's clear expectations and repetitive movements helped me develop intense focus, enabling me to concentrate and channel my energy productively. The structured environment of karate allowed me to thrive, cultivating confidence and mastery through the repetition of techniques and routines. As familiar patterns and movements became ingrained, I felt a sense of accomplishment and growth.
My karate journey has been a profoundly transformative experience. With each small victory, I've found motivation to push forward, mastering new techniques and growing as a practitioner. The belt promotions have served as significant milestones, celebrating each achievement has kept me engaged, eager to progress, and driven to succeed. But most importantly, sharing these achievements with my karate family has fostered a strong sense of community and belonging, making the journey even more rewarding and enriching. The support and camaraderie of my fellow practitioners have turned a personal journey into a collective experience, inspiring me to continue growing and improving. As I progressed in my karate journey, I reached a point where I was able to give back to the community that had supported me. I began assisting with training the beginners, sharing my knowledge and experience to help them grow. This new role not only deepened my understanding of karate but also allowed me to develop leadership skills, patience, and empathy. By guiding others, I reinforced my own techniques and gained a new appreciation for the art. It was a fulfilling experience, and I felt proud to be able to pay it forward and contribute to the growth of my fellow karate practitioners.
I also attend an annual karate camp, which provides an opportunity to intensify my training, learn from experienced instructors, and bond with fellow practitioners. These camps help me deepen my understanding of karate, challenge myself, and further develop my skills. Moreover, the camps provide a chance to meet and learn from other karate practitioners from various dojos, exposing me to diverse perspectives and approaches. This exchange of ideas and experiences enriches my karate journey and fosters a sense of unity and camaraderie within the karate community. I've had the opportunity to take belt tests twice at the annual karate camps. The first time, I successfully earned my brown belt, a significant milestone in my karate journey. The second time, I took another step forward, earning my first kyu rank and propelling myself into training for the ultimate goal: my black belt test. This progression has been a testament to my hard work, dedication, and the supportive environment of the karate camps.
For over a year, I dedicated myself to rigorous preparation for my intensive Shodan training. A key focus of my training was mastering my current and previous katas. I made sure to review my old katas, including Heian Shodan to Tekki Shodan, as I had been warned that during the test, the examiner would randomly select one of these katas for me to perform, without giving me a choice. This thorough preparation helped me build a strong foundation and confidence in my abilities, ensuring I was ready for the challenge of the Shodan test. In addition to my karate training, I also prioritized physical conditioning by regularly visiting the gym to focus on strength and cardio exercises. Recognizing the importance of both strength and endurance in karate, I committed to a rigorous schedule, practicing four times a week at the gym and supplementing that with private sessions, which brought my total practice frequency to five times a week. This intense regimen helped me build the physical resilience and stamina necessary to excel in my Shodan training and ultimately succeed in my black belt test. I was also practicing basics and sparring. Some of the basics from the tests are built on techniques learned as a colored belt. A month before the test, I was practicing sparring and like always I took a good punch to the stomach but this time I was punched hard in the ribs. Despite the pain and rigor, I continued to train for the test.
After months of intense preparation, I embarked on a long journey to take the highly anticipated Shodan test, a milestone moment in my karate journey. The test was a demanding 2-hour evaluation that pushed my skills, endurance, and dedication to the limit. Despite feeling fatigued and pressured, I tapped into my rigorous training and mental resilience to overcome the challenges. This test was the culmination of my hard work and perseverance, and I was determined to give it everything I had. Taking a deep breath, I began the test, channeling all my energy into showcasing my mastery of techniques, katas, and sparring. The two hours passed in a blur of activity, with each segment presenting unique obstacles. Notably, I was testing alongside many older men, which added an extra layer of challenge and motivation. Nevertheless, I drew upon my training and mental toughness to push through the pain and exhaustion, refusing to give up. With every technique, kata, and sparring match, I left everything on the mat, giving it my all.
When the test finally came to a close, I felt an overwhelming sense of pride and accomplishment, knowing that I had given it my all and left everything on the mat. However, my excitement was tempered by nervousness as I awaited the results, unsure if I had passed. As I listened to the names being called, my heart raced with anticipation. Then, I heard my name followed by "Shodan" - I had passed! I am now a black belt in karate, a testament to years of hard work and dedication made possible by the small wins along the way. This achievement marked a significant milestone in my journey, and I felt an immense sense of pride and fulfillment.
My autism played a pivotal role in my success as a karate practitioner, culminating in the ultimate achievement of earning a black belt. Autism enhanced my attention to detail, allowing me to master techniques with precision and intensity. The repetitive nature of karate resonated with my autistic brain, enabling me to persevere through challenges and maintain a consistent work ethic. By embracing my neurodiversity, I found success and a sense of pride that continues to inspire me.
Many of the skills I learned as a lower belt remain essential to my practice as a black belt, demonstrating the long-term value of my dedication. Most importantly, my love for karate was amplified by my autism, fueling dedicated practice and unwavering commitment. While many struggle with the repetitive nature of karate and find it too difficult, I embraced my autism and harnessed its strengths to push through and achieve my goal.
